Advancing the science of natural psychedelics to enhance well-being, creativity, and human potential in everyday lives.
Where others ask "how do we treat what's broken?" we ask "how do we unlock what's possible?"
We shift the focus from illness to growth — helping people not just cope, but truly thrive. A California 501(c)(3) research nonprofit.
Our Approach
Today's psychedelic renaissance focuses almost entirely on treating illness. Metanoia prioritizes the everyday, healthy person — someone not seeking therapy, but aspiring to elevate their well-being, creativity, self-awareness, and potential — through a multidisciplinary research approach integrating neuroscience, genetics, chemistry, and therapeutic practice.
How psychedelics — psilocybin, LSD, ayahuasca, iboga — affect brain activity, neuroplasticity, and cognition, in plain language.

Everything a psychedelic does begins with one molecular handshake: psilocin binding to the serotonin 2A receptor. What that does at the scale of the whole mind — loosening the brain's habitual filters, briefly making thought more fluid — is where the science gets interesting.
The discovery that matters most for us is neuroplasticity, and it runs across the whole family: psilocybin, ayahuasca, and iboga each appear to switch on the brain's machinery of structural change, opening a temporary window when the brain is unusually ready to form new patterns. For healthy people seeking growth, that window may be the whole point.
Whether genetic factors shape how individuals respond to psychedelics — across the whole family — for personal development.

Why do two people take the same dose and have completely different experiences? Part of the answer is genetic — the enzymes that break psilocin down, and the natural variants of the receptor it acts on, differ from person to person. In some trials, a real fraction of volunteers showed no clear response at all.
No human study has yet linked a specific genotype to the strength of a psychedelic experience — with psilocybin, LSD, or anything else in the family. Closing that gap is a step toward safer, more personalized frameworks for growth — matching approach to individual rather than treating everyone the same.
Studying natural sources — mushrooms, cacti, vines, and bark — as whole chemical systems, not single molecules.

Since 1958, science has largely treated the psilocybin mushroom as a delivery device for one molecule. We study it as what it actually is: a living chemical system — psilocybin alongside its relatives and an "entourage" of related compounds, all built along one short enzymatic pathway.
Whether that whole system does something a single purified molecule does not — the entourage question — is one of the field's most consequential open problems. We map the evidence honestly, from the biochemistry to the ethnobotanical roots, marking exactly where the solid ground ends.
Evidence-based frameworks for safe preparation, experience, and integration — across every substance in the family.

The molecule is only half the story. Set and setting — the state of mind and the surroundings — are primary determinants of whether an experience helps or harms. Every tradition knew this: the mushroom velada, the ayahuasca ceremony, the iboga initiation — each was always taken in context, with guidance.
We develop evidence-based frameworks for the whole arc — preparation, the experience itself, and the integration afterward that turns insight into lasting change. If a plasticity window is real, integration is where its value is captured or lost. Metanoia conducts research and education; we do not supply any controlled substance.
Why It Matters
We translate peer-reviewed research — from journals like Nature, Science, and JAMA Psychiatry — into knowledge people can actually use.
Featured Education
A comprehensive, richly illustrated exploration of psilocybin mushrooms not as one molecule, but as a living chemical system: biosynthesis, the entourage of related compounds, dose and variability, cultivation, the brain mechanism, and the ethics of traditional knowledge. Rigorous for experts, yet clear for the curious newcomer.
How We're Built
Metanoia is a mission-driven nonprofit foundation in California, paired with a separate for-profit research arm. The nonprofit leads research, education, and fundraising; the subsidiary handles operations and revenue. The structure lets us stay ethically focused while building the resources for lasting impact.
All public education and fundraising benefits the nonprofit mission.
Our Stance
"The psychedelic renaissance is happening with or without proper guidance. Our choice is whether it unfolds safely, scientifically, and equitably — and whether it serves the everyday person seeking to thrive, not only the patient seeking a cure."
Metanoia is built around the science, not around personalities. You won't find our faces here — and that's on purpose.
